Gini Alexander
Bio and Artist Statement
Fascinated by art from the very first box of crayons, Gini Alexander has always been inspired by color. Oil, pastel, and acrylic each offer a different opportunity for depicting an image.
An outstanding instructor, Richard Heidsiek, provided the early motivation, inspiration and background for her continued study of art.
Heidsiek encouraged students to study artists and art movements over the centuries, emulating the styles and techniques that most appealed to them. It was in the freedom of The Impressionist Movement with its play of light and color, that Gini saw an exciting new way of seeing and interpreting her vision.
A student of Commercial Art at San Jose State, Gini holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, Cum Laude in Graphic Design from Arizona State University. She has also studied art with Richard Yip, Susan Sarback, Irene Lester, and Marilyn Rose.
An award winning artist and fourth generation Californian, Gini and her family spent many years in Arizona, where she worked in graphic design and radio advertising. When she and her husband returned to California she transferred her graphic design knowledge to the printing industry.
It was the production of a Susan Sarback lithograph that introduced her to The School of Light and Color. Susan’s print reflected the Impressionist style that she loved and motivated her to seek instruction at the school and return to painting. She began painting with Susan in 1996 and soon there was talk of opening a gallery.
Gini is a founding member of Chroma Gallery, Fair Oaks California, which opened in Spring of 1998.
A member of the Sierra Pastel Society, she has shown at the Crocker Art Museum, Sutter’s Canvas for Cancer, Pastels on High, New Artworks – Bold Expressions, and has paintings in collections throughout the United States.
