Paula Cameto
Bio and Artist Statement
Paula Cameto had the very good fortune to have two parents who enjoyed art, art history and artistic expression. Her father, a physician, was an accomplished sculptor and ceramist. Her mother, a homemaker, is an exhibiting painter, papermaker and printmaker.Paula's formal art education began at the University of Utah where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1969.
Her designer-craftsman emphasis exposed her to many forms of art, including jewelry making, ceramics, printmaking, drawing, painting, sculpture and art history. After marriage and earning a California State Teaching Credential she taught at the secondary level in southern California until beginning a family. While parenting she studied calligraphy, developed illustration skills and participated in art docent and other art-related volunteer work. Graphic design became a strong interest and in 1985 she received a certificate from the University of California at Davis. As graphic design became more computer-oriented Paula looked elsewhere for artistic motivation.
In 1995, she discovered Susan Sarback's "full-spectrum" color theory. For the first time painting became a primary focus. She found the combination of studying how light affects color in nature and the challenge of working with oil paints and soft pastels to be a very engaging and uplifting experience. At present, Paula is a founding member of the Chroma Gallery and a teacher of basic drawing at the School of Light and Color in Fair Oaks.
